-Seminario de la FCAG “New Cataclysmic Variables Stars identified from S-PLUS data” – M. Sc. Romualdo Eleutério da Silva Junior, (Observatório Nacional, Brasil).
Resumen: Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are binary systems in which a white dwarf (WD) accretes matter from a main-sequence star that has filled its Roche lobe. Traditional methods for identifying these systems, based on optical variability and X-ray emission, exhibit biases that favor objects with high variability and amplitude, as well as closer (∼1.5 kpc) and brighter (Lx(0.3−10 keV) ∼ 1033 erg s-1) systems. Overreliance on these techniques can lead to an underestimation of the true CV population and biases against certain subclasses, resulting in an incomplete understanding of their evolution and physical properties. Recently, we developed an alternative approach to identifying CVs using the 12-band photometry of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). Confirmation of CV status is achieved through spectroscopy with GMOS/Gemini-South, followed by photometric characterization using SPARC4 at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, in Brazil, to search for signatures of the orbital period and WD rotation rate. In this seminar, we will present the results of this ongoing project, which has already revealed 26 new CVs — including low X-ray luminosity magnetic systems and CVs in the period gap that are easily missed by traditional methods. We will also show preliminary results from applying machine learning for systematic selection and automatic classification of these sources into their respective subclasses.
