OFFICE MEMO lat-lon to UTM conversion. Date: 4/28/98

Dear GMT users:

This is not a strictly GMT-related question, but I assume that there are
a lot of geographers out there and it is (I think) a question they might be
able to answer. A co-worker has asked me if I know how to make a conversion
between lat-lon coordinates and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)
coordinates. He explains that UTM is more of an x-y system, and was wondering
if there was a prescribed set of tranformation equations. I'm familiar with
how you might calculate an estimate of distance between 2 points on a lat-lon
grid,assuming a round earth, ( dy = radius earth * d(lat. in radians), etc.)
but this application supposedly requires GPS-like accuracy. I have a feeling
my crude estimates wouldn't be good enough. Does anyone out there know
anything about this type of coordinate conversion? Thanks in advance.
