Error running example 5.4.2 of ver 3

I working with GMT Ver. 3 Aug. 1995 on an SGI Challenge IRIX 5.3
I get the following error when I attempt to run example 5.4.2 pg 30, from the command line.

GMT Fatal Error: lonpath could not allocate memory, n = -153

Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this?
